HOW A TINY COLLEGE RADIO STATION BECAME THE HOME FOR HIP HOP IN CHICAGO
Located 57th Street and University Avenue in Chicago's Hyde Park, the University of Chicago's tiny 100-watt station was known as the "Pride of the South Side", serving both the university and neighborhood communities. Because it wasn't a commercial station, the DJ's had a huge amount of freedom to play the music they wanted to hear. This meant Jazz, Blues, Punk Rock, and, of course Hip Hop.
